Four generations of the sedan have been produced, all equipped with V8 engines and rear-wheel drive. Since 2006, all-wheel drive, hybrid, and long-wheelbase variants have also been offered. The original Lexus LS 400, the first Lexus to be developed, was introduced as the premium marque's debut model in 1989. Following the initial model, subsequent redesigns included the second-generation LS 400 in 1995, LS 430 in 2001, and the LS 460/LS 460 L series in 2006. A domestic-market version of the LS 400 and LS 430, badged the Toyota Celsior, was sold in Japan until the Lexus marque was introduced to the country in 2006. The LS 400 was among the first luxury sedans to feature an automatic tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with SRS airbag, power adjustable shoulder seat belts, and an electrochromic rear-view mirror.[23][24] The five-passenger cabin included California walnut and leather trim, power-adjustable seats, and soft-touch controls. A back-lit electroluminescent gauge cluster featured a holographic visual effect, with indicator lights projected onto the instrument panel.[23][25] The memory system stored the driver's seat, side mirror, steering wheel, and seat belt positions. The public unveiling of the vehicle occurred in a gala ceremony held at the San Francisco Opera House in California.[45] The sedan was equipped with an updated 4.0 liter 1UZ-FE V8 engine, producing 194 kilowatts (260 hp) and 366 newton metres (270 ft·lbf) of torque.[46] Internally, over 90% of the redesigned LS 400's composition was new or redesigned,[46] with increased sound insulation, a strengthened body structure, suspension updates, and improved brakes.[46] The redesigned model was 95 kg (210 lb) lighter than its predecessor and achieved slightly better fuel economy.[46] The 0–100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) time improved to 7.5 seconds.[47] 1994–1996 Lexus LS 400 (UCF20). The sedan was equipped with a new 4.3 liter 3UZ-FE engine generating 216 kilowatts (290 hp) and 434 newton metres (320 ft·lbf) of torque.[42] The standard suspension had been completely redesigned, with a double-wishbone setup at all four wheels; a Euro-tuned suspension was offered for the first time.[42] A new torque-activated electronic control unit made throttle adjustments based on vehicle speed, engine revolutions per minute, and pedal position.[58] The LS 430 sported a 0–100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) acceleration time of 6.7 seconds.[59] Sales began in October 2000 in the U.S.[60] 2000–2002 Lexus LS 430 (UCF30). Introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show for the 2007 model year, the fourth-generation Lexus LS became the first Lexus model to be produced in both standard and long-wheelbase versions. The suite of new safety features extended from a eye-tracking driver monitoring system to a lane departure warning system.[94][95] The pre-collision system added the first production image processing chip in a car capable of identifying vehicles and pedestrians in real time,[96][97] along with millimeter-wavelength radar, stereo cameras, and infrared night vision projectors.[96] A rear pre-collision system with whiplash-preventing active seat headrests and dual-chamber front airbags was also introduced.[94][98] The LS 460 and LS 460 L arrived at dealerships in Japan, the U.S., and Europe in late 2006,[99] and the vehicle reached Australia, East Asia, and the Middle East in 2007.[100] The U.S. base prices for the 2007 LS 460 and LS 460 L were US$61,000 and US$71,000, respectively.[92] In 2006 and 2007, the average price paid for U.S. market LS 460 L sedans exceeded US$80,000, due largely to added options packages, placing the Lexus LS in the same average price range as its long-wheelbase Audi, BMW, and Jaguar rivals for the first time.[92] Lexus LS 600h L hybrid (UVF46). After debuting a hybrid powertrain with the 2005 LF-Sh concept, Lexus began sales of the LS 600h L (UVF46), the first production V8-powered full-hybrid vehicle,[101] in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The long-wheelbase LS 600h L is equipped with Lexus Hybrid Drive, featuring a 5.0 liter 2UR-FSE V8 engine mated to a high-output electric motor with nickel-metal hydride battery packs.[87] This system uses a continuously variable transmission and generates an output of 327 kilowatts (439 hp).[87] Fuel economy is slightly higher overall than the lower-powered non-hybrid LS, and the hybrids achieve a U.S. Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) rating.[102][103] Features specific to the LS hybrids include the first production low beam LED headlights, a leather-trimmed dash, and blue-tinted hybrid badging.[81] In April 2007, Lexus announced that the base price for the LS 600h L would be over US$104,000,[104] surpassing the V12-equipped Toyota Century as the most expensive Japanese luxury car ever produced.[104] A standard-wheelbase version destined for Asia and Europe, the LS 600h (UVF45), was launched in Japan in April 2006.[105] The first 100 LS 600h L sedans sold in the U.S. were offered as "Launch Edition" models via the Neiman Marcus catalog for InCircle members.[106] In 2008, all-wheel drive versions of the non-hybrid LS 460 (USF45) and LS 460 L (USF46) models premiered at the Moscow International Motor Show.[107] Debuting at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance,[108] the LS 600h L "Pebble Beach Edition", limited to 50 units, was produced in partnership with the Pebble Beach Company.[109] A specialized Lexus LS 460 was installed as a driving simulator at Toyota's Higashifuji Technical Center, in Shizuoka, Japan, for automotive safety testing,[110] and in 2009 at Tokyo's Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS-Safety) exhibition, the LS 460 ITS-Safety concept was unveiled showing road-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle information-exchange technologies.[111] [edit] 2009–present Lexus LS 460 Sport Debuting in late 2009 for the 2010 model year, the revised LS 460 and LS 460 L included restyled front and rear fascias, side mirror turn signals, and new wheel designs.[112] New technology included automatic high beam lights and a self-repairing clear coat for the exterior paint.[113][114] The standard cabin received additional chrome trim, an optional DVD entertainment system behind the center armrest, and in certain markets, an all-digital instrument panel with night vision capability.[112] The LS 460 Sport—a performance variant equipped with a sport-tuned air suspension, Brembo brakes, forged wheels, paddle shifters, body kit, and a unique interior—was added.[112][113] The Sport model received the Sport Direct Shift transmission, also found in the Lexus IS F, with downshift rev-matching capability and manual mode.[115] A new interior customization program, "L-Select", also became available for LS customers in Japan.[112] [edit] Manufacturing Further information: Tahara plant The Lexus LS has been consistently produced on dedicated Lexus assembly lines at Toyota's flagship Tahara factory,[116] located in the city of Tahara, in Aichi Prefecture, Chūbu region, southwest of Nagoya, since 1989.[82][117] Tahara remains the sole production site, having inaugurated its new line number four specifically for assembly of the original LS 400.[118] Lexus LS UZ V8 engine exhibit at the California Science Center For the Lexus LS, the Tahara plant developed new molds and enhanced assembly techniques[119][120] and instituted measures aimed at increasing the precision of the sedan's fit and finish.[13] The 1989 LS 400 became the first production automobile to receive extensive laser welding,[119][121] allowing for seamless steel welds.[120] A large sheet metal press was developed to reduce or eliminate panel gaps by stamping large sections whole instead of singly.[120] Separately installed parts, such as exterior lights, were also spring loaded for a tighter fit.[121] On the LS 400, engineers reduced door panel gaps in half versus Toyota-brand vehicles, from 7 mm (0.28 in) to 4 mm (0.16 in),[120] with measurements made within 0.01 millimetres (0.00039 in);[60] on the LS 430, measurement margins were increased tenfold, to 0.001 mm (3.9×10−5 in).[60][122] When production switched to the LS 460, the number of laser welds was doubled.[123] Despite Tahara's large-scale automation, Lexus LS production also involves specialized personnel who are tasked with key production points, such as testing each vehicle's V8 engine via dynamometer and stethoscope for calibration before installation.[82][124] With the LS 460, a hand-sanded paint process was introduced.[82] The production standards used on the Lexus LS were eventually adopted by the manufacturer for other vehicles; in 2007, the assembly of Toyota Corolla economy cars used the same panel gap measurements as the LS 400 did eighteen years earlier.[125] [edit] Industrial significance LS 400 cutaway model displaying internal construction at the Wroughton Classic. The Lexus LS marked the first successful entrant of a Japanese manufacturer into the prestige luxury arena,[38] a market that had long been dominated by established European and American brands. By 1991, with the LS 400 its top-selling model,[126] Lexus had overtaken Mercedes-Benz and BMW in overall U.S. sales,[127] and in 2000, the marque passed Cadillac as the luxury sales leader in the largest automotive market.[128] Rival manufacturers responded with lower prices and added features.[129] In particular, Mercedes-Benz reorganized its operations, shifting to a targeted-cost process similar to Lexus production methods,[130] and dropped competing U.S. base prices by nearly 10%.[131] To rival the LS 400,[132] extra features were rushed for the launch of the 1991 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140),[130][133] causing budget overruns and costing the job of Daimler-Benz's chief engineer, Wolfgang Peter.[132] Approximately 5% of 1989 LS 400 sales went to buyers employed by rival manufacturers, including GM, Ford, and Chrysler.[126] When the LS 400 was disassembled for engineering analysis, Cadillac engineers concluded that the vehicle could not be built using existing GM methods.[134] Industry publications noted the LS 400's precise panel gaps, and the subject became a common evaluation standard in road tests.[132] The LS 430's interior noise level was later used as a measure of cabin quiet.[135] According to industry observers, the introduction of the Lexus LS reshaped Toyota's image from that of an "econobox" manufacturer to the builder of an automotive standard bearer.[136][137] This stood in contrast to the predictions of early detractors, including rival manufacturers who dismissed Toyota as incapable of producing a competitive luxury vehicle.[137] Japanese contemporaries from the luxury divisions of Honda (Acura) and Nissan (Infiniti) had differing degrees of success.[138] Honda had entered into a joint venture with Britain's Austin Rover Group in November 1981, launching Project XX with an Austin Rover–Honda XX letter of intent to replace the Rover SD1 with the Rover 800 and to provide a midsize, V6-powered luxury sedan for Honda, called the Honda Legend.[139] Marketed as the Acura Legend in the U.S., the sedan initially sold well, but subsequent models (renamed Acura RL) performed below sales expectations.[140][141] Launched by Nissan in December 1989, the V8-powered Infiniti Q45 closely rivaled the LS 400 in specifications and price,[142] but was unsuccessful in sales (attributed to unconventional styling and marketing), leading to its discontinuation in 2006.[143] The success of the Lexus LS became a test case for mainstream manufacturers targeting upscale segments. Yet Toyota achieved it in less than one with its Lexus luxury offshoot. And the car that really did the business for the Japanese firm was the flagship LS400. At its 1990 launch, it made an immediate impact on the prestige sector, teaching the establishment a trick or two. Now this capable saloon can be bought for the price of a used Ford Mondeo. Here's what to look for...DrivingIf you like your motoring to be serene, swift and silent, then few can match this one. It wafts along with Rolls-Royce elegance and is a tremendous mile-eater.The sheer size and bulk of the Lexus rules it out as a driving machine, and compared to a Jaguar XJ or the best from BMW, the LS400 feels vague and unrewarding to hustle along quickly. (However, an optional handling package introduced in 1997 tightened up the suspension.) That said, motorways show the Lexus in its best light, where the legal limit seems too much of a crawl.Only one engine is available, and what a gem it is, too. The 4.0-litre V8 (4.2 on the latest model) is one of the silkiest you'll find. With a choice of 241, 260 or 280bhp on tap depending upon model, this big saloon is no slouch. It will keep up with the best GTis, yet return around 23mpg. Top speed is 155mph.There's no manual transmission option, but the automatic suits the car extremely well because it's so beautifully smooth. One word sums up driving an LS400: effortless. It's extremely docile in town and yet can surge past slow traffic with a press of the throttle. If ever a car could drive itself, it's this Lexus.Living with At nearly 16ft 6in long and 6ft wide, the bulky and admittedly dreary-looking LS400 is a big beast to park or negotiate through town. But there's no shortage of space or comfort inside. The cabin was made even better for the 1995 model year when, among a raft of improvements, the LS also gained a longer wheelbase for added room.At launch, Lexus shocked and rocked the luxury car market by taking on and very nearly beating the establishment at its own game in the refinement stakes. Although the appearance of the original LS400 seems largely unchanged over its lifetime, there have been continual revisions and improvements to keep it up with the best. These include better seating, air-conditioning and even more equipment: leather trim, heated chairs, cruise control, powered steering adjustment... You name it and this Lexus has it. But one area where it took Toyota time to catch up was in the cabin's finish, which for some years lacked the ambience and aura of those of the best Germans.Buying and owning A used LS400 is as comfortable and relaxing to own as it is to drive. Its reliability has won numerous awards for customer satisfaction. Lexus says it has never sold a replacement auto box since the car was launched. How's that for durability?However, the model's undoubtedly robust nature is tinged with some extremely high spares and repair costs, and this really bumps up its pence per mile figure. It's a complex car that needs main dealer skill and understanding ΂- and Lexus specialists are fairly thin on the ground.Notwithstanding the price premium, a main dealer is also the best place to buy used, even if the firm downgraded its Lexus Approved scheme from three years to one some time ago, because it cost too much to operate. The good news is that it is still a top-quality programme.The manufacturer-backed 12-month plan mirrors that of the new car warranty, has no mileage limit and covers models dating back seven years or which have covered up to 140,000 miles. Other benefits include an RAC inspection and breakdown cover, full mileage verification, history check, fresh MoT and excellent vehicle exchange opt-out in case of problems with your car. Such is its reliability and integrity that even the earliest examples are outstanding buys if they have been serviced properly. The Lexus offers levels of refinement and comfort that traditionally only the best brands could provide, while dealer back-up is unsurpassed. That stately styling may be as dull as they come, but the real beauty of the LS400 lurks under the skin. The Lexus RX400h has laid claim to this territory thanks to its combination of petrol engine and two electric motors. There’s no doubt it is a classy looking vehicle but what’s it like to drive? Auto Trader editor Adrian Higgins got behind the wheel for a week of hybrid driving. 1. Looks 8/10 Lexus’s cars don’t generally stand out: they are more about discreet elegance than “look-at-me” bling. But the RX400 is one of the most easily-identifiable and best-looking SUVs on the road. Like its prestige SUV rival, the Porsche Cayenne, the RX400 has a very sporty stance and a coupe-like profile which lends it a very modern look. Lexus is the first to admit this, the facelifted RX400 doesn’t actually look very different from its predecessor. The main changes are a revised front grille, and integrated front fog lights, but many won’t spot the difference. 2. Looks inside 8/10 The RX400h doesn’t disappoint once you get inside. The interior lives up to its luxury tag with cream leather creating a feeling of roominess while the wood from the previous model has been replaced by aluminum. The information display is simple to read and the central console, flanked by vertical air vents, is neat and stylish. Go for the top SE-L trim or choose sat-nav as an option on the SE grade and you can access information on the Hybrid Synergy Drive system via the same monitor. 3. Practicality 7/10 The Lexus 400h is both roomy and practical. There is plenty of room for drivers, passengers and possessions plus a 439 litre boot accessed by a power tailgate. Everything you would expect on a luxury SUV. 4. Ride and Handling 7/10 SUVs tend to have a comfortable ride while being let down by the handling. This stylish vehicle does have a 4×4 system but we’d be surprised to find many drivers employing that off-road. It steers fine on the tarmac and the ride lives up to the luxury image. 5. Performance 8/10 There’s nothing weedy about this green machine, with 269bhp enabling it to cover 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds, with the top speed standing at 124mph. The power comes from a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine, coupled with electric motors back and front. The car can run on electric power alone at slower speeds with the petrol engine kicking into life when acceleration or a little more speed is needed. The silent nature of electric motor driving is a little disconcerting to start with and it is worth keeping an extra-vigilant eye out for unwary pedestrians who may not have heard your approach 6. Running Costs 7/10 If you travel into London during peak hours the RX400h’s hybrid power source will save you having to cough up for the congestion charge. The 192g/km of carbon dioxide it creates land it in tax bracket F, and an annual bill of £190 a year. The 400h returns an average of 34.9mpg, not bad for an SUV, but may surprise some simply going on its “green” credentials. Some have argued that while the petrol hybrid is more economical than purely petrol models, other models 7. Reliability 8/10 Lexus’ reliability is legendary.
