Back to About Lexus As a result of customer feedback, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is preparing a recall of some Lexus LS 600h and LS 460 models equipped with the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS). The precise number of cars involved is still being finalised but initial figures show approximately 11,500 vehicles are affected globally. We are anticipating around 40 units to be affected in the UK market. No other Lexus vehicles are affected by this issue.This matter has been under investigation by TMC since March this year who have received approximately 10 complaints in Japan. No accidents have been reported relating to this issue and we have received no reported cases of this concern in the UK market.VGRS is a feature that enables easier handling during low-speed driving and provides better stability during high-speed driving than conventional steering by changing the gear ratio.The problem occurs at low speed when manoeuvring the steering wheel to full lock position. If the driver then returns the steering wheel very fast, this could lead to a steering wheel off-centre condition even though the driving wheels would be straight. This phenomenon will be resolved automatically in a few seconds and the driver may notice this correction as the steering wheel centre moves slowly by itself to the centre position when driving straight during the correction operation. The driver remains in control of the vehicle as the steering wheel self corrects itself. Laurance Yap PHOENIX–At its electronically limited top speed of 220 km/h, the new hybrid Lexus LS 600h – the fastest, most powerful hybrid car in the world – is rock-solid, its suspension filtering out the biggest bumps on the banked oval at Toyota's massive proving grounds in Arizona. Wind noise is hushed, the Mark Levinson stereo plays clean and clear and my back tingles, thanks to the ministrations of a shiatsu massager. As the scenery blurs by the window, I glance over the driver's shoulder and note that both the V8 engine and the electric motor are contributing to our amazingly smooth, effortless progress.Well, given the chance, you'd want to take a high-speed ride in the back seat, too. Although the LS 600h L – h for hybrid, L for long wheelbase – surrounds its driver with technology and convenience, it's the back-seat inhabitants who get the best toys. The seat massager (you can choose from three programs), the stunning 19-speaker stereo (which also comes with headphones for more privacy) and the UV-reflecting double-glazed side glass are just the beginning.To wit: the seat, upholstered in high-grade semi-aniline leather, reclines and has a pop-out ottoman to support your lower legs. A tray table for your laptop (or a glass of champagne and a plate of finger sandwiches) pops out of the centre console. Its top is inlaid with wood. Should the stereo not be sufficiently entertaining, you can watch DVDs on one of the largest, brightest screens ever installed in a production car. Then there are the power sunshades, an integrated telephone and even a set of seat controls for the front passenger seat, should you need more space to stretch out.Compared with all that, the driver's seat can seem a bit of a letdown at first. Sure, the seat itself has a 16-way power adjustment. And it may face a set of controls that operate one of the world's most technologically sophisticated cars. But up front, after the indulgence of the back, it can all seem just a little pedestrian. The gauges are clean and clear but not particularly exciting. An awful lot of tiny plastic buttons surround an awful lot of big plastic displays with winking numbers and symbols. Controls for the navigation system, audio, climate control and other secondary systems are stacked densely one on top of the other.There's a lot going on here and it looks like work.In reality, you can leave most of the systems untouched – most have an auto switch – and driving the LS 600h L isn't work at all. Driving it at 220 km/h around the banked oval is almost as easy as sitting in the back at the same speed.It's still eerily quiet and the ride is still very smooth – the only added sensation is one of big power and even bigger torque lurking under your right foot. Lexus claims the combination of a 5.0-litre gasoline engine with its Hybrid Synergy Drive is roughly equivalent to a 6.0-litre V12, producing a combined total output of 438 hp and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. And the electric motor's ability to deliver full torque at low revs means it feels much more powerful than that.A combination of all-wheel drive (the standard torque split in regular driving is 40 per cent front, 60 per cent rear) and a battery of traction aids means the car can pretty much deal with any low-traction situation. Even on a slick tile surface, giving the car full throttle from a standing start produces impressive acceleration as the Vehicle Dynamics Interactive Management system (Lexus's most advanced stability control) and the all-wheel-drive system juggle torque to the wheels that can grip. Acceleration is truly seamless, thanks to the continuously variable automatic transmission, and next-generation hybrid software that minimizes the shunts and jerks of previous models as the gas engine starts and stops.It's hard to draw any real conclusions about the handling; our time with the 600h was limited to arrow-straight roads in Arizona and a few laps of Toyota's handling circuit. The 600h obviously isn't a sports car. The electrically assisted, variable-ratio steering doesn't offer up much road feel and while the adjustable suspension's sport setting provides more grip and poise in corners, it also introduces some jiggle into the chassis. On faster, flowing roads, the 600h is in its element: swift, silent, composed and very stable. Ultimately, while this is a car that's less involving to drive than a Mercedes S600, Audi A8 W12 or BMW 760, performance enthusiasts are not the people Lexus is targeting with the 600h. There are performance-oriented models coming – the IS-F and LF-A – for those with a need for speed. The 600h is about indulgence. Opt for the executive package (which includes the tastiest optional goodies, such as the DVD system, the ottoman and self-park functionality) and the dash and door panels are completely wrapped in leather. All finishes, inside and out, are of exceptional quality. There's so much more to talk about with this car. It has a built-in collision avoidance system that will brake to almost a dead stop if it senses you're about to crash into something (while simultaneously tensing the seatbelts). The stability-control system can not only brake individual wheels, but can vary the steering ratio and provide extra assist to make evasive manoeuvres easier. A button on the dash allows you to drive in full electric mode under 40 km/h, using no fuel at all, so long as there's enough charge in the battery. A sensor on the steering column "reads" your face and knows if you're looking ahead to where a potential collision looms. If not, it alerts you audibly and visibly while it prepares the car for a crash. The list of features and innovations goes on and on.Given the price of $132,000 to $158,700, the LS 600h maintains the Lexus policy of pricing its offerings slightly lower than its main rivals.S600s start at about $170,000 and don't offer all-wheel drive or a hybrid drivetrain. Many Lexus goodies are optional on the Benz or not available at all. If you're looking for high-tech in a big package, this is the car to have right now. Which raises a question: Is the LS 600h L a technology and performance flagship, or is it an environmentally conscious choice? Can it, in fact, be both? Its hybrid drivetrain and the performance it delivers are impressive, but while parent Toyota has put fuel economy first in its offerings – particularly the Prius and Camry hybrids – Lexus has focused on using the technology as a performance-enhancing tool.Rather than downsizing the gas engine and adding a hybrid power pack (as in the Camry) to produce power similar to a larger motor, the 600h's gas engine is bigger than the V8 in the LS 460. The car's fuel economy savings (Lexus claims numbers on par with a 3.5-litre V6, borne out by our testing) and low emission levels come primarily from its ability to turn off the gas engine during low-speed driving. But drive the car aggressively, indulging in all that power, and the consumption numbers aren't as impressive.Yes, the 600h is significantly more economical than the V12-powered sedans with which it competes, but that's kind of like saying a whole-wheat Krispy Kreme doughnut is better for you than the full-fat version. It's a greener choice than any of the V12 Germans, but the 600h is still a huge, luxurious and fast sedan. The hybrid badging on the back may help assuage the consciences of people who can afford it, but it's hard to call the 2,025 kg 600h an environmentally friendly car with a straight face.But as a piece of automotive engineering, it is impressive – and a lot of the technology it introduces will filter down to more mainstream vehicles.In reality, that's this car's primary role for Lexus: to demonstrate the brand's leadership in innovation and performance and to cement its marketing hold on hybrid technology.
