Auto Express Car Reviews By Chris ThorpNovember 2003 Back in the mid-Nineties, buyers in the market for a small executive car had a limited choice. Only three names dominated - BMW, Mercedes and Audi. It was a market where image was king and the badge on your bonnet as important as the size of your pay cheque. All that changed in 1999, when Lexus gatecrashed the party with the IS200, successfully taking on the Ger-man heavyweights in quality and image.
Four years on, the IS200 is still a force to be reckoned with. But to keep it fresh, Lexus has added a top-value special edition and ushered in some subtle revisions. We got our hands on the facelifted Limited Edition - LE - to see how it has been refined.
Like the BMW 3-Series ES, the IS200 LE has been produced to bring value for money to a machine that has only previously been marketed as a premium four-door saloon. Based on the SE, the LE features 17-inch alloy wheels, high-intensity discharge headlamps and full leather trim. That is in addition to front, side and curtain airbags, climate control and a six-CD autochanger. The car is available with Lexus' silky-smooth six-cylinder 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre engines, with an automatic gearbox offered on the larger unit. We opted for an entry-level model to maximise value for money. No technical changes have been made, so the familiar straight-six soundtrack and decent performance remain, while the emphasis is on a sporty chassis set-up. Despite that, the large wheels don't seem to detract from the IS200's ability to soak up bumps, and it's still a fine motorway mile-muncher. The 2.0-litre Lexus covers the 0-62mph sprint in 9.5 seconds, but fuel economy of 28.8mpg means expensive fill-ups for high-mileage drivers.
Visually, it would take a real Lexus anorak to spot the changes that have been made to the styling across the IS200 range. Both front and rear lights have been redesigned to incorporate a smoke-effect finish, but otherwise the looks have been left untouched - no bad thing, as Lexus' smallest saloon is also its most attractive.
Inside, the modifications made to a superbly built cabin are equally unobtrusive, but add extra character. Along with more dashboard stowage space, the interior now features mock aluminium trim around the electric window switches and heating controls.
But the real test of any limited edition is its price. If you were to spec up an SE model to LE levels, it would cost ΂£1,200 in extra options, but Lexus has added only ΂£460 to the SE's list price. That makes the 2.0-litre LE ΂£20,795, while the 3.0-litre costs ΂£22,025. What Next COMPARE CAR LOANS COMPARE CAR INSURANCE For more breaking car news and reviews, subscribe to Auto Express magazine. Along with a minor facelift, the LE offers great value and a sporty drive. And while it might be a little more expensive than the 318i ES, it does come packed with plenty of luxurious standard-fit equipment. A smartly styled, two-litre executive car with a straight-six cylinder engine. Perfect weight distribution and rear wheel drive to appeal to the keen driver. A brand thats all about prestige and technical innovation. It has to be a BMW 3 Series doesnt it? Well, if imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, BMW should be blushing coyly. Having already launched the LS400 and GS300 models in the UK, the Lexus brand, once derided as just a range of fancy Toyotas, now carries some serious clout. The IS200 was their first foray into the junior-executive saloon market and has sold in steady numbers. This was largely due to the limited range of engine choices. Whilst outright performance was nothing to get too excited about, the IS200s appeal lay in its jewel-like detailing and peerless after-sales service. The IS200 is full of little surprise-and-delight features. The styling is sharp and sporty. The front end is particularly neat, with the minimal overhangs and big front wheels giving the car an aggressively contemporary look. The clear-lens rear light clusters look like crystals and appear especially effective on darker-coloured cars. Inside, the story is the same. The biggest talking point on the IS200s introduction was the fascia dials. Designed to resemble a divers chronometer, they look a great deal better than they work in practice, being slightly fiddly to read. Everyone who gets into the vehicle notices them though. Another visual trick the designers have played is making the IS200 look larger than it actually is. The tape measure reveals it to be 71mm shorter than a 3 Series, 5mm lower and 19mm narrower. This is a difference you feel once inside, particularly in the rear, where headroom for six footers is at a premium, despite scooped-out seats that put second row passengers below the level of those in front. Boot space isn't huge either. Nonetheless, the IS200 gives its driver more to make them feel good than many rivals. The three-spoke sports steering wheel feels great to hold and in the Sport version (which also has a limited slip differential), there are drilled metal pedals a la Lamborghini Diablo to make you feel as if you're at the wheel of a supercar. The gruff engine note won't disappoint in this respect either - though it may come as something of a shock to owners of larger Lexus models used to a cathedral hush. This being Lexus, it goes without saying that all IS200s come with a generous specification: dual front and side airbags, alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, traction control, a six-CD autochanger and climate controlled air conditioning are included across all three trim levels. The two plusher versions have 17" alloy wheels, combination leather trim as well as power for the sunroof and seat adjustment. With a decent quantity of IS200s now finding their way onto the used market there should be scope for getting the trim/colour of your choice. You should be able to bag an IS200 S for £6,750. This will land you a 1999 T-plated example with approximately 53,000 miles on the clock. Budget another £800 for a similar vintage SE and expect to pay £7,600 for an SE auto. The range-topping 2.0 Sport model will require at least £7,800 of your disposable income. All models bar the Sport are group 12 insurance, the flagship model just tipping into group 13. These reasonable insurance ratings are helped by the fact that the IS200 was declared Britains most secure car by a panel of security experts. You may well see far less expensive Lexus IS200s advertised in classified sections. Beware. A well-known car importing company was prosecuted for rebadging Japanese import Toyota Altezzas as Lexus (Lexi?) and this is what you may well be looking at. If in doubt, look for an aftermarket rear fog lamp, dials that re calibrated for km/h and always ask to inspect the paperwork. As with all other Lexus models, there is, amazingly, almost nothing to report. Toyota were determined to make these cars as faultless and long-lasting as possible and it seems they've succeeded. The main worry with a Lexus will be accident damage or mileage clocking. The panel gaps on the IS200 astound even now in terms of consistency and flushness of fit, so a second-rate repair will be obvious. If you can, check the car's service records and cross-reference mileage with the dealers who carried out the scheduled maintenance. That way, you'll have peace of mind that the immaculate, low-mileage car you're looking at really is just that.(approx. based on IS200 2.0 SE) If youre after a new exhaust system, you may need to sit down before reading on: £700. Now thats out of the way, the rest of the parts prices arent too bad. Front brake pads are around £75 a set, with rears a reasonable £35. A radiator will cost around £200 for a manual car, but a weightier £300 for an automatic. An alternator is around £370, and a new starter motor £170.Whilst the engine is smooth, torquey and agreeable, powerful is one attribute that couldnt really be levelled at the IS200s 2.0-litre unit. Therefore you cant expect searing performance - though rest to sixty in 9.5s on the way to 134mph is hardly glacial. This puts the baby Lexus mid-way between four and six-cylinder rivals in terms of performance - much as you would expect. You shouldn't suffer too much at the pumps however. Around 30mpg ought to be possible in average conditions. Transmission choice is between a slick, standard six-speed manual and a much less sporty four-speed automatic. The handling is good and the relatively modest power, traction control system and wide tyres act as a reassurance to buyers in any way nervous about graduating to a rear-wheel drive car. If the Lexus IS200 range had an entry level four-cylinder engine and a true flagship performance version, the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi would be very scared. As it is, it makes an interesting, if slightly individual used buy. The Lexus after sales package is superb, and a used IS200 should please all but the most ardent speed freak. With the second generation car, it achieved an identity all of its own and along with that came genuine reasons to buy it other than not liking or being able to afford a BMW 3 Series. With outstanding build quality and peerless dealer backup, the MK2 IS might just be the most stress-free used executive car around right now. LS 600h + SHARE Twitter Facebook Delicous Stumble Digg More... New IS 200d sports saloon joins revised Lexus IS Series The best-selling Lexus model series in the UK has just got even better. Set to officially launch at the Paris motor show, the revised IS Series now includes the new IS 200d (pictured below) and a wealth of benefits to every model. The IS 200d replaces the IS 220d as the diesel sports saloon of choice. But don’t think for a second that going from 220d to 200d is a backward step.
The new IS 200d has been developed with the needs of discerning diesel saloon buyers in mind. This means better fuel economy, lower emissions and a more refined, smoother drive than the previous model.
With a Euro 5 emission-compliant engine and BIK company car tax rating of just 18 per cent, the new IS 200d is cleaner and even more affordable to own. You’ll find it in Lexus Centre showrooms priced from £24,350 (IS 200d SE) on the road – and it’s available to order now.
If diesel engines aren’t for you, don’t worry. The super-smooth V6 petrol engine featured in the IS 250 sports saloon and IS 250C coupe-convertible has also been revised to meet Euro 5 emissions standards. Even better, the improvements to fuel economy and emissions come with no sacrifice to performance.
If you’re looking to indulge your sporty nature, then you need to know about the new 2011 F-Sport options. They include a raft of exterior and interior upgrades, from a new deep front spoiler and fog lights, to leather and Alcantara sports seats and 18-inch alloy wheels directly inspired by the high-performance IS F.
We don’t want to spoil all of the surprises for you. Visit your local Lexus Centre to find out more about the revised IS Series – just don’t forget to ask them about the new leather upholstery, LED daytime running lights, alloy wheel designs, new exterior colours… and much more.

Reply Melissa Coulton says: September 17, 2010 at 3:13 pm Hi Jay,
The new IS 200d should arrive in showrooms during the first two weeks of October; a specialist is checking exactly when it will arrive at Croydon. I’ll get back to you when I’ve heard back from him. Thanks. Reply Jay says: September 17, 2010 at 4:32 pm hi thanks for the reply,

Not to worry, I’ll make sure I get this information instead. I can tell you, however, that the main changes to the new IS 250 F-Sport include new front and rear spoilers, new fog lights, redesigned grille, redesigned 18-inch alloy wheels, leather and Alcantara seat trim and anthracite roof liner.
