It has meant that while you need to be a certain sort of person to want, say, a BMW, anyone might have a Lexus on their shopping list. It’s more than a little telling that not only do lead characters in shows as gritty as Spooks and Waking The Dead drive Lexus products, but so too do rather more lightweight comedic small screeners such as Martin Clunes in Doc Martin and that most famous of all fictional Lexus drivers, Alan Partridge. These product placements have been made because Lexus has twigged that to want a Lexus, first you must know what one is. And this very anonymity with which Lexus has hitherto been so comfortable is responsible for the fact that, in the UK, the marque has a brand recognition of just six per cent. It seems that topping the JD Power customer satisfaction survey five years in a row is just not enough. So it has been decided that Lexus needs to embrace the automotive mainstream and this, the new IS220d, is the car that’s going to do it. You spotted that little ‘d’, didn’t you? We will find out during this test whether the fact that there is now a diesel Lexus says more about how far diesel technology has progressed, or how desperate Lexus is to offer a product that does not automatically exclude the majority of its potential customers – as petrol power does in this and most of the other classes in which Lexus competes. For now, however, be advised that this is not only Lexus’s first ever diesel, it is its first ever four-cylinder car. Is this a big leap for the Lexus faithful brought up to believe that refinement was the one Lexus immutable? Maybe, but we have seen already that Lexus needs to widen its scope beyond the narrow traditional confines and, besides, Jaguar did exactly the same in 2003 with the fine X-type diesel. Report this review The Lexus IS 220D SE-I is a lovely car to look at but several areas bother me. The ride get very unsettled in rough roads. Not quite the ride I would have expected from a Prestige car. The centre consul looks like it was designed in the 90's. Very much like a ghetto blaster with lots of little buttons and meaningless display lights that are hard to read. The plastic materials in the centre consul do not match the superb quality found elsewhere in the cabin. Think hollow feel plastic, and you get the picture. The car does not like to drive in 4th gear ( it has 6 gears) in town traffic i.e. around 30mph. Too highly geared and don't believe the economy figures that Lexus claim. You will not get close to them. As for 6th gear, you have to go beyond the motorway speed limit before the engine is comfortable in that gear. Will I change for another car in three years time? I will certainly consider Lexus along with the usual German suspects and perhaps the Korean car manufacturers will have moved into this market, like they have in the US They seemed to have ramped up quality ten fold in the small family car market, so who knows? Summary, Lexus, you win all the plaudits for best dealerships, reliability, green credentials etc. However, you really need to outsource your consul designs to Italy, Germany or perhaps California. Get a grip on the gearing. You have designed a car that is every bit as good looking as the benchmark i.e. BMW 3 Series. However, make the drive more exciting. The steering is great, but both BMW and Audi really know how to make a Diesel. Lexus's Toyota Diesel although smooth, is nowhere near as good as its German rivals. I have now made the change to a Lexus I S 220d, and I am so pleased I did so. Everything about Lexus ownership is first class. The dealers are so helpful,especially Andrew at Lexus Stockport !! The car is just beautifully inside and out I think the Germans have to watch out for Lexus. Auto Express Car Reviews By Chris ThorpNovember 2005 If there's one thing modern executive cars simply can't do without, it's a diesel engine. Unless there's a frugal oil-burner in the line-up, buyers will turn away. Even so, Lexus has been getting by without a diesel for the past 15 years, trading on build quality, refinement and dealer service. But this couldn't go on for ever, and the Japanese firm has finally reacted to the European demand for oil-burners. It has built its first model to drink from the black pump - the IS220d. On sale in January, together with a V6 petrol - tested by Auto Express in Issue 882 - the all-new IS will have a complete line-up to take on the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class. While the larger GS and the next-generation luxury LS will both achieve the desired mix of low emissions and excellent economy by using petrol/electric hybrids, for the cheaper compact executive class Lexus had no alternative but to delve into the world of derv. We took the wheel of one of the first to arrive in Europe to see how the new model measures up. The first surprise is the gearbox - it's a manual. Bosses claim that, as automatics aren't popular in diesel compact executives, it wasn't worth developing one. Instead, the IS220d has a new six-speed box which makes smooth changes, but has a long-throw lever. Once on the move, both the driver and passengers would have trouble distinguishing what's in the tank. When cruising, the Lexus is whisper-quiet, matching the refinement of the world's best luxury diesels. Only when pushed harder does the engine note take on a harsher edge, separating it from the firm's near-silent unleaded powerplants. With an 8.9-second 0-62mph time, the IS takes only 0.5 seconds longer than its petrol stablemate to complete the benchmark sprint. However, it doesn't feel all that fast on the road. Acceleration is strong between 2,000 and 4,000rpm, but this model only really shines when cruising. Few buyers will have any complaints about running costs. Economy of 44.8mpg is excellent, while low CO2 emissions make the IS a viable option for company car drivers, too. Insurance ratings start at group 12E, which should also keep the cost of cover to a minimum. In terms of pricing, the diesel-powered IS range costs from ΂£22,200 for the entry-level model, rising to ΂£27,800 for the luxurious flagship. While this looks steep compared to German rivals, buyers of high-spec versions will want for nothing in the sumptuously trimmed cabin. Lexus has done without a diesel for too long. Competitors offer a sharper driving experience, but if comfort and refinement are a priority, the IS220d could be just what you've been waiting for.
