Photograph: Simon Stuart-Miller For some years now Lexus has been American for luxury. It doesn't matter that the car is Japanese – part of Toyota – because it's a brand that has had a major cultural impact in the States. If you'd been an American novelist in the last decade or so and you'd wanted to create a character who was successful, materially comfortable and, perhaps, a little complacent, you'd probably have them drive a Lexus. This is a car assembled in a work area that's completely free of human presence… The system flows forever onward, automated to priestly nuance… It's a culmination in a way, machines made and shaped outside the little splat of human speech. And this made my rented car a natural match for the landscape I was crossing."If you say so, Don. No doubt wise to the literary significance, last year Lexus magazine commissioned a serial novella featuring a Lexus IS-F as a self-conscious character. "Dude," it says at one point, "you don't get a ride like me to be sensible."However, in Europe, home of Mercedes, BMW and Audi, writers showed little curiosity in the Lexus. Perhaps more troublingly for the Lexus marketing department, it wasn't just British novelists who failed to embrace the car. Drivers weren't that bothered, either.This was in spite of a whole load of product placement in such key cultural shop fronts as EastEnders, Waking The Dead and Spooks. Nevertheless, it remained the car without an identity, which is why Alan Partridge also drove one. It was Partridge, of course, who memorably suggested that the plural of Lexus is "Lexi", thus ensuring that Lexi could never be sexy.What changed Lexus's British fortunes was the introduction of the IS 220d in 2005. The reviews were mixed but, back in those days of endless credit, sales were healthy.This updated version boasts a sizeable drop in carbon emissions, sustained performance and frozen prices. The one I drove came with cream leather upholstery which, in its magnificent impracticality, represents to me the very essence of luxury. Whether that concept can be reconciled with my daughter, an apple juice and a yogurt bar remains open to question.Still, it's a smooth ride, comfortable with a reassuring sense of power when called upon. It's solid and well put together without being particularly attractive. In short, it's another well-made executive saloon – and a slight improvement on its predecessor – which is perfectly nice to drive. But you wouldn't want to read a novel about one. We're talking about copycat versions of their most high-performance cars, aiming to mate the style of the utmost versions with a more realistic budget. Think BMW 318i M Sport, Audi A4 1.8 TFSI S Line, and AMG styling packs for the C-Class. So, unsurprisingly, Lexus has got in on the act, its new F-Sport brand evoking thoughts of its crazy V8-engined IS F saloon. Sadly, driving the IS 220d evokes nothing of the sort.What are its rivals?We've gone through the theory behind the F-Sport trim, but this 220d, with its 175bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine, is a direct rival to the BMW 320d M Sport, the Audi A4 2.0 TDI S Line and the Mercedes C-Class 220 CDI Sport. It undercuts them all by over £1,000 and is slightly better equipped.How does it drive?Unfortunately there's little that's sporty about the way the IS 220d drives. The heavily bolstered F-Sport seats look good and are supportive, but the driving position takes some getting used to. The wheel is angled upwards, the pedals offset to the right, and the chair set quite high. Overall that makes the driver feel slightly cramped and uncomfortable. The 2.2-litre diesel engine packs a punch, and the six-speed manual gearbox is light and slick through the gate, but the pair has a similar sort of relationship to Bart and Homer Simpson: one's always trying to choke the other. The issue seems to be with the gear ratios. In sixth gear at 70mph the car feels on the verge of stalling, and around town the revs drop too far after an up-change, so you'll often find yourself changing back down to get some power. Odd.What's impressive?The IS 220d is well built and mostly refined on the move. The bigger 18-inch wheels of the F-Sport trim can sometimes lead to an over-firm feeling on bumpy roads, but largely speaking the Lexus smothers the tarmac's imperfections nicely. And because it's rear-wheel drive, with accurate steering and a nice, light feel at the front, it's fun to throw about a bit.What's not?While the materials that layer the dash top are wonderfully thick and high quality, and the general build quality worthy of any executive car, the Lexus still feels like a posh Toyota inside. There's just very little flair in the design.It also has the noisiest transmission we've heard for some time; stuff like that should be a thing of the past, especially in a near £30,000 car.Should I buy one?The IS 220d undercuts its rivals, but it also falls short of them in almost every area. The engine, for example, offers 50.4mpg combined economy and 148g/km of CO2 - hardly fat cat figures - but the (quicker) BMW 320d comes back with 60.1mpg and 125g/km. More dynamic and yet more efficient, you might say. Plus Lexus sees fit to bundle its satnav with a premium audio system (albeit a sensational one) and charges over £3,000 for it. The IS 220d isn't a bad car, and is worth a look if you wish to be conspicuously different, but Lexus has some way to go before it can match the Germans like-for-like.Mark Nichol Buzz up!
